JOHN KENNEDY

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JOHN KENNEDY

With over 45 years in the music industry, John Kennedy’s journey is a remarkable tale of passion, dedication, and iconic moments. His new memoir, “JUST FOR ONE HOUR”, shares these stories, including his countless ‘pinch me’ moments, reflecting on a career that has shaped the global music landscape.

The book’s title comes from a day nearly 40 years ago when Bob Geldof asked him for ‘just one free hour’ – a request that has since grown into around 20,000 unpaid hours. This time included monumental contributions such as helping to stage Live Aid, co-producing Live 8, and executive producing the Live Aid and Live 8 DVDs.

Alongside his work on these landmark events, Kennedy built a successful music business legal practice, representing some of the most prominent artists, songwriters, and independent labels. He then became Chairman of Polygram Films and Records, later stepping into the role of Chairman and CEO of Universal Music UK, the country’s largest music label. His influence expanded further as he took on the roles of President and COO of Universal Music International, and Chairman of the body representing the global music industry.

In recognition of his contributions, Kennedy was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 1994. In 2006, the French government honoured him with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a title he shared with Bob Geldof and Harvey Goldsmith. That same month, the trio was named Music Personalities of the Year.

Kennedy also led the campaign to extend the European copyright period for sound recordings from 50 to 70 years – a success that continues to bring significant economic benefits to artists and labels alike.

Today, John Kennedy remains active as a consultant in the industry and proudly co-manages Richard Ashcroft, the frontman of The Verve and a successful solo artist whose iconic song “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is one of the top 600 most-streamed tracks out of 100 million.

Reflecting on his career, Kennedy cherishes the extraordinary people he has encountered, from royalty – both real and music business royalty – to a saint and a few sinners. As his memoir reveals, he’s still enjoying the ride and hopes his journey is far from over.
